Early years expert Ros Bayley and literary specialist Sue Palmer will provide you with the latest research and practical advice for helping children build a solid foundation for literacy.
Date: Thursday 26 April 2012
Venue: Wynyard Rooms, Billingham, TS22 5TB
Time: 9.00am – 3.30pm
This course is based on Ros and Sue’s best-selling book “Foundations of Literacy”, now in its fourth edition. They consulted speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, experts in child development, music specialists and early years practitioners in the UK and around Europe, notably Finland (a country famed for its high achievement in literacy). The key message of the book is that, before embarking on formal literacy learning, children need time to develop:
• Speaking, listening and attention skills
• Concepts of print and understanding of phonics
• The physical skills that underpin handwriting
This presentation sets out seven strands of practice which can form the basis of literacy teaching for children between the ages of three and six:
• Learning to listen
• Time to talk
• Music, movement and memory
• Story time
• Learning about print
• Tuning into sound
• Moving into writing
In this highly practical workshop aimed at early years practitioners, the exceptional Neil Griffiths, will explore the use of story and rhyme in the development of activities across the mathematics curriculum.
Date: Thursday 28 June 2012
Venue: MetroCentre Marriott Hotel, Gateshead
Time: 9.00am – 12.00pm
This session will focus upon:
•Use of picture books to introduce and develop mathematical concepts
•How puppets, masks, storysacks and role play can be used in a mathematical setting
• Developing number through rhyme
• The creation of stories to promote mathematical procedures
Participants will receive useful activity handouts and take away from the session hand-made resources and patterns for later use in the classroom.
This new thought-provoking course is designed for both experienced and newly trained practitioners, across all key stages. Created in response to the need to return to the fundamentals of working with children, this half day session with Neil Griffiths has the potential to change your practice dramatically for the good of the child.
Date: Thursday 28 June 2012
Venue: MetroCentre Marriott Hotel, Gateshead
